Hi Folks

Has any one else been given Alendronic Acid and Calceos because they are on steriods?

I'm cautious adding another drug into the mix as I'm just about to start Humira - but my GP said these are to reduce getting osteoporosis. I'm wondering how important this actually is... especially as I'm due to start cutting down the prednisolone once the Humira kicks in (which I hope it does!).

I worry when I am able to answer so many posts!!! I am either a hypochondriac or ill!!!

I am on prednisolone, starting out on very high doses 23 years ago but for the last couple of years, maybe longer as I've lost track, I have dropped to a maintenance dose of 3mg. It is unlikely I will ever be able to come off them completely.

I am on Adcal D3. This is a combination tablet containing calcium carbonate and colecalciferol. It is used in RA patients to help prevent osteoporosis which can be caused by, usually long term, steroid use. It's a preventative medication rather than a treatment and if your doctor feels it is appropriate I would definitely take it, at least whilst you are taking the steroids. It isn't a drug as such so don't worry about taking it.

The Alendronic acid I'm not sure about. However the GP must have a reason for prescribing it so I would try it for now. Just watch out for side effects!

I also take Alendronic acid, and Adcal D3, was put on it after being on steriods for about 3 months by the conusltant, as I still take 8.5 of prednisolone nearly 3 years on (trying to reduce) I figured that although it was another drug to take its only once a week, and if it does what it says on the label then its better than ending up with osteroperosis as well as RA. Maybe I'm a little un cautious as I take everything prescribed in the hope that it will help in some way. The only downside to it is that I can't have my cup of coffee first thing in the morning, on the day I take it or go straight back to bed as you are supposed to stand up (ha ha) or sit up straight and just take it with water and nothing else for 30 minutes. There's usually ways round this, I just alter the routine on that morning by showering first or if I'm particulary rough take it the day after I should. Probably not supposed to do this but it seems to work for me.
